Volume I Plate 47 - Royal Shrine to Ramesses II (Pictorial Impression) ~ Ramesses II, also known as Ramesses the Great, ruled Egypt c.1279-1213 BC. He was the son of Seti I (himself the son of Ramesses I). The pictured shrines are at a site called Gebel Silsila, site of the greatest sandstone quarries in Egypt and these shrines were carved by it's quarrymen from the sandstone. They deteriorated over centuries of occasional flooding.
