Volume III Plate 12 - The Temple of Luxor (West Obelisk) ~ Obelisks were a prominent part of the architecture of the ancient Egyptians. Only twenty-seven ancient Egyptian obelisks are known to have survived, plus a partly hewn obelisk was found in its quarry at Aswan.

The obelisk symbolized the sun god Ra. It was thought that the god existed within the structure and many times the obelisk was tipped with gold sheeting to reflect the golden rays of the sun.

The Romans were infatuated with obelisks, to the extent that there are now more than twice as many obelisks standing in Rome as remain in Egypt.

This Obelisk was raised by Ramesses II.
