Volume IV Plate 39 - The Ptolemaic temple at Qaw el-Kebir (Antaiopolis) (Ruins) ~ Picturesquely sited in a grove of palm trees, this temple was built by Ptolemy IV, enlarged by Ptolemy VI and Marcus Aurelius. It was inscribed with Greek texts.
The French were fascinated with the beautiful large palms found in this area and they observed that their drooping leaves were a source for many of the striking sculpted column capitals in Egyptian architecture. This unique graphic record of this temple is important because the antiquity was swept away by the waters of the Nile in 1821.
